A festive home does not need a new colour scheme in every room. If you enjoy warm wood, neutral textiles and greenery throughout the year, let Christmas grow from that starting point. Reusing the pieces you already love makes decorating feel connected to your home.

Choose a few focal points

An entrance, the dining table and a favourite corner may be enough. Clear those areas first, then decide which practical surfaces need to remain available. Decorations should leave room for meals, conversations and the ordinary routines that continue through December.

Use texture and shape

Simple ornaments can feel distinctive through their form rather than their shine. Consider softly rounded shapes, warm-toned finishes or a restrained branch arrangement. Keep heavier pieces low and stable, and check that hanging decorations are securely supported.

Make lighting practical

Use decorative lights only where their rating and instructions allow. Check electrical products before use, keep cords out of walkways and avoid overloading sockets. Follow the manufacturer's guidance on placement and switching off. Keep all foliage and decorations away from naked flames and heat sources.

Leave room at the table

A low arrangement often works better for conversation than a tall centrepiece. Start with the plates, glasses and serving dishes you actually need, then see what space remains. Greenery, one sculptural object or a simple textile can be enough.

Plan for next year

Before putting everything away, note which pieces you enjoyed using and which stayed in their boxes. Store decorations clean and dry according to their instructions. A smaller collection that comes out every year can become more meaningful than a completely different look each season.

The aim is a home that feels ready to welcome people, with enough space left to enjoy their company.
